SAN NICOLÁS DE TOLENTINO
San Nicolás de Tolentino, nowadays known as La Aldea de San Nicolás, is a town situated on the west side of Gran Canaria, in the wide valley between high mountain ranges.
There are three routes leading to San Nicolás. The simplest is the way from the south, first by highway GC1 to Puerto Rico and then through Mogán. The most difficult and dangerous route leads from Artenara, but these amazing, beautiful landscapes are really worth this risk. Third road, the most used one, leads to situated in the north Agaete. It's the most picturesque: going along the mountain slopes, on the high altitude, above boundless water of Atlantic Ocean, rich in many sharp curves. Travel by this route will be really an unforgettable experience.
San Nicolás as a town isn't the most attractive place on the island. The residents are the farmers, they live from cultivation, especially tomatoes. Huge areas are covered with sheets of canvas to create optimal conditions for crops. But it's really worth to see the small square at church of Iglesia de San Nicolás, and also go to the coast to Puerto de San Nicolás. In this place you find a tiny port, rocky beach (Playa de la Aldea) with a pleasant promenade and the pino marino - thick pine forest, filled with tens of picnic tables, which are held on weekend family feasts.
