San Francisco - Telde

SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco is a historical district of Telde, located in direct neighbourhood of the second important for the town district - San Juan. It was founded in 1483 and was originally known as Altozano de Santa María La Antigua.

San Francisco - Telde This place, situated on the small hill, formerly was full of life and inhabited mainly by workers and craftsmen. Today in this place reigns calm and quiet. The narrow, squiggly streets diverge in every direction. Along them are placed low, flat houses, beautifully painted in white and green, decorated with wooden balconies. All this makes an incredibly character of this place.

Bailadero - San Francisco - Telde - enlarge photo Bailadero - formerly known as Baladero. Here we find remains of old Aboriginal home, unfortunately preserved in very bad condition. However, without any doubt, the most interesting in this area is an aqueduct - constructed in XIXth century, located along the beautifully paved alley C/ Inés Chemida. This alley is, at the same time, a connection between two districts: San Juan and San Francisco. A walk through the narrow, squiggly streets toward the hill of Santa María la Antigua leads us to the modest church of San Francisco.

It was erected in the same place as a former chapel of Ermita de Santa María La Antigua. The main fasade facing the c/Portería street and Plaza de los Romeros. Its simple construction distinguishes by the characteristic tower, which is also a belfry.

Directly in the opposite we'll see the Tara and Cendro, where the most archeological discoveries in this region took their places.
